Amelanchier alnifolia Mandam

The Mandam serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia “Mandam”) is an ornamental and fruit-bearing shrub from the rose family, usually growing to a height of about 2–3 metres, with a compact and slightly spreading habit. In spring, it is covered with white flowers that appear before the leaves and give the plant a highly decorative appearance. In summer, it produces spherical, dark blue-purple fruits with a delicate waxy coating, which have a sweet and sour, aromatic flavour, great for eating raw and for preserves. The leaves are intensely green in summer and turn yellow, orange and red in autumn, which increases the plant's decorative value. 'Mandam' is a frost-resistant, easy-to-grow variety that thrives in sunny or semi-shaded locations and in average soils, making it suitable for both ornamental and fruit gardens.
