Amelanchier alnifolia Honeywood - Serviceberry ; Saskatoon
Amelanchier alnifolia Honeywood
Amelanchier alnifolia 'Honeywood' (Amelanchier alnifolia “Honeywood”) is a decorative and fruit-bearing shrub or small tree of the rose family, native to Canada. It usually reaches 3–5 m in height and a similar width, with an initially upright habit, becoming slightly arching with age. In spring, it blooms profusely with white flowers, which appear slightly later than other varieties, making them more frost-resistant. In summer, the shrub produces large, edible fruits ranging in colour from red-purple to blue-black, sweet and juicy, ideal for eating raw and for making jams, juices and desserts. The leaves are green in summer and autumn, turning striking shades of orange, red and yellow, and the plant is frost-resistant and easy to grow.
